Borat - Movie Review
2"Borat" (2006) directed by Larry Charles might very well be the best comedy film ever produced. It is also the most politically incorrect mainstream movie to exist, which may or may not be the reason why it's so great.
Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) is an eccentric man from the greatest country in the world, Kazakhstan. However even the greatest countries have their own share of problems, and so the ministers of Kazakhstan send Borat to the U.S.A. to learn of their culture and hopefully bring back some useful lessons home with him. Borat discovers the 1989 Baywatch television series and instantly falls in love with Pamela Anderson. Borat changes the parameters of his trip so that he can go and marry (kidnap) Pamela Anderson.
Borat is extremely funny because of how insensitive it is. The antisemitism featured throughout is key to the film's success and pretty much solidifies it as a entirely unique one of a kind movie as nobody else dares to try something like this. Sometimes real world stuff can ruin films like this, but I would argue it enhances it. Sacha Baron Cohen is Jewish in real life, and Kazakhstan is obviously a real place, making this parody that much more effective and funny.
I really enjoyed the found footage style used here, as well as the forced subtitles which you can't turn off. While Sacha Baron Cohen is obviously playing a character, literally everyone else around him feels like a real person that they just randomly found off the street and recorded gags out of, the film comes off highly authentic and the ridiculous situations are believable. The humor is shocking and politically incorrect, which is why it's so funny. Other than the antisemitism, I particularly enjoyed the rampant misogyny and incest remarks, hearing Borat casually remark about how he purchased his 12 year old wife is just not something you hear about every day and it's just perfectly done here.
Borat is truly the greatest comedy of all time. I dare you to point me in the direction of something superior to this, the only real competition coming to my mind would be The Office, but that one falls off in it's later seasons and is child's play compared to Borat as far as political incorrectness goes.
