Typically speaking, despite being a bit of a dumbass, I quite enjoy games that involve building complicated production chains and laying out miles and miles of pipes and conveyor belts, and I’ve spent far too many hours fine tuning my spaghetti network of conveyors in Satisfactory, so when I caught wind of a new game called Captain of Industry, a game that involves building advanced production chains, managing your own colony and digging out huge quarries and dumping the excess material wherever you like anywhere on the map, I was pretty hyped.

It’s like a mix between Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, Factorio and Endzone because you have to do everything from building a reliable production chain on some pretty advanced items, making sure your workers have food and somewhere to live, and sending out your ship to explore nearby islands and points of interest.

But as good as all that sounds, it unfortunately failed to capture my imagination or make me care about my factory the way something like Satisfactory does.

Basically the game’s set on a procedurally generated island and you start out with a handful of simple trucks and workers, and the goal is to build up a massive industrial complex and produce everything from concrete blocks and different types of food, to diesel and eventually your very own rocket ship, which is all stuff you apparently need in order to survive on an abandoned island.

You have to build housing complexes for your workers, starting out with simple container structures and upgrading them over time to become proper houses using the construction materials you manufacture from raw materials.

I dunno how many different items there are in the game but it feels like hundreds. There’s everything from basic stuff you pull from the ground using an excavator, stuff like coal and iron, and then there’s stuff that goes through many different forms before ending up as a washing machine or electronics, and it takes a while to get a handle on the best way to lay out all the different buildings involved in the process, especially if you’re a perfectionist and want to maximise production to avoid waste.

Now I don’t know if it’s the ugly UI, the dull visuals or just the overall lack of interesting things to do beyond just building more products to be able to build more products, but it really just failed to make me feel connected with any of my so called colonists or really care about any of the stuff I’m manufacturing at all.

Other than seeing trucks driving around the map taking produce from one building to another in lue of a conveyor belt, there’s really not much happening and it quickly began to feel stale.

It was interesting watching the blast furnace melt down iron scraps and turn it into refined, red hot iron plates that then get ferried off on a lorry into the assembly building where it gets turned into mechanical parts or construction materials, but after an hour or 2 when the buzz wears off, the only thing to look forward to is just more of the same, and that was a bit of a bummer.

Sure you can open the map and watch a white ship icon move between areas of the map looking for stuff to explore, but it really doesn’t feel like exploring and there’s no degree of excitement or anxiety involved at all since your ship almost always comes back with a boat load of stuff on every excursion, no pun intended.

Weirdly enough you can upgrade your ship with guns and armour to fight pirates, but that’s about where I gave up.

I think it’s another game that tried to implement too many ideas and ended up coming out feeling generic, boring and repetitive, and unfortunately the fairly extensive research tree isn’t enough to make me want to play it any more, so with that said and done, I’m gonna go uninstall it and try not to pout over spending £25 on it.

It’s worth pointing out that it’s still currently in early access and it’s got very positive reviews on Steam so there’s a chance you might like it or some of the things I’ve mentioned in the video might get improved on before its full release, but this was my take on it and if you want my opinion you’re better off playing something like Workers & Resources or Satisfactory if you’re looking for a similar sort of game that’ll keep you fully engrossed for hours on end.

Thanks for watching!
