Time to play the Expansions!

It's finally time to go back to where it pretty much all really kicked off. Not where it began. That was years before. But where it literally blew the hell up. The conception of the modern-day gaming experience as we know it.

SCROLL BELOW TO LEARN ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE WITH QUAKE 1

Wanna fill up most of my screen for like 20-30 seconds during livestreams? Have a question or a suggestion for me? Maybe you just want to feed my love of coffee biscuits and QUAKE? Now you can!

-------------------------------------
When Quake launched:
-------------------------------------
We had to use DOS because batch command files and Winquake and servers with server browsers all came later as a byproduct of Quake and Unreal Tournament later on down the road.

This was the first real game that did not use MIDI files for music. So, when we heard the games soundtrack, we lost our freakin' minds! I lived in New Orleans at the time. I was hella into Nine Inch Nails. Trent's Studio was not far from my place in the Garden District.

-------------------------------
By like 6 months in:
-------------------------------
We had WinQuake and batch command files that allowed the user to have a config file for their settings on launch and could simply click a shortcut on the Windows desktop. Then came a small group of folks that called themselves QSpy. They basically made a browser and a way for folks to link up with each other's servers without having to dial long distance phone calls to a central server. This was "the moment" when it all blew up.

--------------------------------
By like 9 months in:
--------------------------------
The first real life consumer GFX cards were produced. I had a Voodoo FX SST1 "graphics accelerator card". It was about $330 USD in 1996 money and was the best out there at the time. This was my NVIDIA ##90 series equivalent GFX card of today! The Voodoo FX SST1 had 4 MEGABYTES of Graphics Memory.

With it, I could use the latest in Quake updates. Stipple Alpha. All you need to know was this allowed for transparent textures in game. Like water and stuff. You could see folks hiding in the water if you had this card. A SERIOUS ADVANTAGE! I was stomping folks in 640 x 480 like you wouldn't believe!

Except for John Romero. That guy was like [insert your favorite FPS games' best streamer here]. He was also part of the team at ID software that made the game!

--------------------------
By like a year in:
--------------------------
I was getting ready to order a new Voodoo FX card coming out. Qspy had become Gamespy or would some short time after. A website called Fileplanet launched so devs and modders could host stuff they made for Quake. They had a quirky community manager named "Ferret".

I was able to experience QUAKE in 800 x 600. While a bit laggy. It was tolerable by 1996 - 1997 standards.

--------------------------------
Some cool info bits:
--------------------------------
John Romero was super involved in the Quake online community. They were only a few hours away from where I lived at the time and we all played on the same regional networks. I have been roflstomped by John Romero on more than many occasions in Quake 1 multiplayer back in the day and have scored like 1 or 2 random kills on them at times.

I was able to attend the first or second Quake con. I forget. But there were not many of us.

Aimbots and game hacking didn't exist in the multiplayer experience realm back then. As such, this game was all raw talent. It was an environment where everything was actually 100% a skill issue. It's a shame there isn't really any recordings left of this day and age. You really can't recapture that vibe today. Not even Quake Champions could really. Though it was a valiant effort.

Music for this game has been replaced in order to not get claimed. Even though Trent Reznor has spoken openly that he is okay with it being streamed many times, the label that owns it says no.

Therefore, we are using an alternate QUAKE music pack called AQM from:
