FG's Underrated Videogame Music 256 - Old Smudged Map (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Name: Old Smudged Map
Game: Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Developer: Nautilus
Year of Release: 2005
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Yoshitaka Hirota, Kenji Ito
One of the most underrated RPG series, Shadow Hearts delivered a darkly amusing twist of an RPG with alternate history combined with mythology made real. While it had its humourous moments, the series does manage to imbibe some sombreness within its proceedings, a little less so with each new title.
Keeping with the theme of its predecessor, Shadow Hearts: Covenant has two themes for the map, one for Europe and one for Asia. The theme of Europe in the game is rather reflective of its darkened history, seeped within old bloodied ruins across the land and strange auld towns that one must inevitable pass through in one's journey across an ancient continent, complete with solemn bells and lute to further allude to its history.
This is also my absolute favourite world map/overworld theme in videogame history.
