These are gameplay clips from Golden Oldies II on the CD-i, a pseudo-throwback to a couple of classic arcade games, primarily Centipede and Arkanoid. Hit or miss on this one? Eh.. I suppose I sit somewhere on the middle with it. Like many CD-i games, music is mostly non-existent, the sound effects are likely canned samples from whatever sound library Philips offered developers, and the gameplay is quite average despite the tried-and-true formula. The problem is that neither game feels particularly polished. Hit detection feels a little off, the connection your shots make doesn't feel particularly satisfying, and in the case of the Centipede clone, the AI doesn't seem to be very well thought out (the centipede can get stuck in corners and you can ignore it and focus on higher scoring spiders and snails in safety). The Centipede clone also seems to be prone to freeze-ups and crashing, which is never a good thing. Still, they are playable, and the block breaker game is definitely the more polished product of the two. They each have that "CD-i feel" though.. You know, that sort of, "ugh, did I just touch that?" type of feeling. Like, it's playable, but you feel dirty afterwards. Or something like that. Such is the case with any unpolished game, but the CD-i is a platform that is notorious for having a greater amount of that than your average platform. This one is part two in a, you guessed it, two part series. The first one has a Defender clone as well as a Space Invaders clone. Of the two, the second game in the series is the more recommendable. Still though, there are better places to play these styles of games, and it doesn't help that neither compilation is easy to get a hold of. If you do decide to track down a copy of this game, a mouse, trackball or roller ball controller is mandatory. The game will play with a game pad, but the movement feels horrible. Like many CD-i titles, the game plays best with an analog-style pointing device.
