How This Video Game Made Unreal Engine A Success | UNREAL TOURNAMENT 1999
Unreal Tournament 1999 is an arena first-person shooter made in Unreal Engine 1 which pioneered video game graphics and online multiplayer.
Set in the future during a conflict between humans and an alien race, ‘consensual murder’ was legalised in the form of ‘deathmatches’. This became a popular sport and you participate in the various matches in the hope of being the new champion. The gameplay was simple but brilliant, with a variety of game modes such as capture point domination, capture the flag and one-sided assault as well as many different maps including the iconic favourite Facing Worlds. You also get a diverse selection of weapons to earn your ‘Monster Kill’, from sniper rifles to miniguns, Sci-Fi bio rifles to shock rifles, and rocket launchers to the redeemer thermonuclear device. Unreal Tournament was not only one of the first games to use Unreal Engine, but it improved several aspects of it and formed an incredible modding community which would shape the video game industry to this day.
