This is also my first playthrough through this game. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.

It's the final level of an episode of original Doom and that can mean only one thing: a boss encounter. My first instinct is that we'll meet a spider mastermind for we haven't encountered one of them yet and it was used as the end boss in episodes three and four despite its lack of stopping power compared to the cyberdemon. That we'll meet at least one cyberdemon too is a given considering the track record of this episode but the most important thing for any level will be encountered in spades: fun.

Can Doomguy escape this deeper pit of the infernal realm and return to Earth to save it from invasion? Let's find out.

I mostly knew what to expect when I began playing through Sigil; it's an episode of Doom and that brings with it many constants but John Romero's fifth chapter managed to surprise me in a number of ways. The levels are well put together, the encounters difficult but manageable and using switches you need to shoot to progress – and to find the secret level – was quite clever. With the level end switch being the only custom graphic, it's safe to say that Romero made great use of the classic Doom assets to create something unique looking that manages to perfectly fit in to the aesthetic of the previous chapters. Then there's the fantastic music, oh the music. They're stuck in my head now, awesome that they are, so I don't think I need to say more on that. Finally the length of the episode was just right, on par with the others that came before it so many years ago. If I were to improve anything, it would be to have an option in the main menu to automatically send a thank you tweet to Romero for creating this little extra bit of Doom for us all to enjoy. If you like Doom you should give this a go but I think you knew I'd say that, didn't you?

So, what's next? I think it's time to return not just to the RPG genre but one that was almost voted for a short while ago. To day that it's heralded as a classic is an understatement and it's also one that I've never played before but when has that ever stopped me from diving right in to a complicated and well-written world in video game form? Ready your swords and despair they eyes, folks, for I'm sure to make a mess of everything and have huge fun while doing so.

See you next let's play!
