Yummy! The islands look like cute little Yoshi cookies!
-----------
Here's a map from the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64! You may remember this one for the dreaded "spin-the-stick" games. Any of you folks crazy enough to blister your hand over those ones? They even started giving out GLOVES for people who purchased the game! I also blame "spin-the-stick" for "breaking" my N64 controllers!

...but enough about the "horrors" of Mario Party.
Let's Talk Yoshi's Tropical Island!

This map has a pretty interesting concept: There are two islands, and the star will only be on one of them, BUT this can change at any time should a question mark space be landed on. Bowser will be found on the non-star island and will sell you a (useless) flotation device for THIRTY coins! You can guess that this creates a lot of tension since you can never be sure whether the star will be where you want it when you reach the spot you have your eyes on!

They also have Thwomps guarding the bridges that ask for a toll should you want to go by them. You get to set the price, though, and the player that comes by next must pay at least one more coin than the amount paid last. Good idea, but you don't usually see much strategy with them in a 20-turn game.

Nearer the end you'll probably notice some odd decisions and mannerisms from the human players. Ah... let's just say folks started feeling like there was no hope at that point and began goofing off. The retalitory measure I made (you should be able to guess what that was) was made because in a "spin-the-stick" 1vs3 game, "Bowser's Tug-o-War", I was teamed with Luigi and Wario and Luigi (the human player) decided not to help at all. I still managed to hold my own with the computer, but not without a little pain on my part. (Interesting results for the tie, though!)

Anyway, that just goes to show how the original Mario Party feels a lot more inflexible/chance oriented than the later ones. If a person seems to be winning the most mini-games, they'll generally get the Mini Game AND Coin Bonus stars, which is a huge lead in a 20-turn Mario Party game. So, it's a lot easier to feel at a loss for a chance to win after a certain point.

Three of us are playing (I'm Yoshi) and we have a "Hard" computer as Wario. This will allow you to see how the computer AI performs in this game. (He makes some, ah.... interesting decisions.)
---------

You'll notice that you don't carry items in the first Mario Party. Instead, after you purchase and activate them from the shop/bank, special blocks may randomly appear and replace the normal die roll. This can be especially nerve-wracking since you never know when you may warp or lose some money, especially if you're near the star!

Koopa at the start gives you some coins, you win coins during mnigames (and lose them, too) , and the only place you can spend them at is Boo who will steal a star for 50 coins (stealing coins is free!).

In short: Coins act as a separate kind of ranking in this game, more so than the others (for tie-breaking stars) since you can't buy any items. You'll also notice the game moves faster due to this!

******
NOTE: This was captured on a Nintendo 64 system via an S-video cable, so the graphics/text may be sharper than you remember seeing them. This is normal.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: The sound desynchs at around 36:00 , it fixes itself in about a minute, however.
