Max Payne 3 takes a far departure from its predecessors in terms of the setting and feal ,Nine years after the events of Max Payne 2, Max is living in São Paulo, Brazil, working as a bodyguard for the wealthy Rodrigo Branco and his family. Max has become completely addicted to alcohol and painkillers in an attempt to cope with the trauma of his past. Max Payne is an incredibly complex character, on 1 hand he is a really kind and sensitive man, always trying to save people and do what he feels is right, but he is also a violent man that will stop at nothing to carry out his version of Justice. I man who has seen things and been deeply traumatized by them he is still clearly a haunted man, and driven by the demons of his past, to me it feels like Max is always trying to somehow redeem the death of his family. The supporting cast of characters is also excellent, and the voice acting is top notch. Max's partner, Passos, is a great sidekick, the game's villains are truly despicable and written well enough to motivate you to keep pushing through the seemingly endless waves of gangsters, corrupt police , and private militia just so you can put an end to the people truly responsible for causing all this death, chaos, and inhumanity, and for what purpose? pure greed.
When the game starts we can immediately see this is an aged Max, a Broken Max who is, a Max that has been drinking and taking pills daily for far to long, and it is showing. The design of the game does a lot of unique things with video and cinematography, to put you in the mind of someone who is disoriented from substance abuse, the effects and lighting are very unique in this game, and they are extreme, this might be the game with the highest risk for triggering a seizure in existence, players may or may not like this, it took me some getting used to. The story itself is very compelling, and you just want to keep playing to see what happens next.
I won't say this is one of the best games I've ever played, but its a really good one, The gameplay in Max Payne 3 is absolutely top-notch. The shooting mechanics are fluid and responsive, and the slow-motion effect allows players to perform some truly cinematic action sequences. The game also features a variety of weapons, including pistols, shotguns, rifles, and machine guns.
In addition to the shooting, Max Payne 3 also features a variety of hand-to-hand combat moves. The hand-to-hand combat is not as complex as the shooting, but it is still satisfying to execute a takedown on an enemy.
This game does 1 thing better than any other game I've ever played and gets a 10 out of 10 when it comes to truly making the player feel like a true bad ass action hero from a movie, with some of the completely over the top fights, and being able to do things like shoot grenades in mid air, while leaping through pains of glass dual pistols blazing and mowing enemies down, this game gets what a 3rd person action shooter should be, Max also has so many good Action Hero1 liners. So Many times I couldn't help but think to myself Yippie Kay Yee mother fucker, i may have even said it out loud a few times.
the bullet time system is perfected, you can even use it to weave and duck enemy fire, there are a quite a few special bullet time moments where you go into bullet time automatically for some truly insane over the top shooting sequences. when you run out of bullet time , you can refill it by simply shooting enemies. what I was really impressed by were the little details, like how enemies react to shooting them in various parts of the their body, the extra narration you get for uncovering clues. this is Rockstar when they were rockstar doing what they used to do best writing stories and made interesting , original, and edgy content, this game came out just a few years before rockstar turning into the makers of generic repetitive MMORPG updates to their top selling games and labeling it as Content.
If you haven't played Max Payne 1 and 2, or you find yourself unable to appreciate the previous games due to dated graphics, Max Payne 3 won't disappoint as a stand alone game. This is Max Payne with Rockstar games in full control, it doesn't have that dark and artistic edge that Remedy brings to their projects, but unlike the first 2 games Max Payne 3 very much feels and looks like a modern game.
