Schio : Giardino Jacquard | Giardino botanico a Schio ( Veneto - Italia - Italy ) tour
This green corner of #Schio, naturally has a gentle slope towards the hill, was transformed and embellished from 1864 to 1878; in fact, functional structures for the nearby factory such as dryers and drying racks for woolen clothes were originally present in the area.
In 1878, the building occupied by the #Jacquard weaving mill (the original N. Tron wool mill) was also definitively demolished, which was connected - as noted in historical documents from 1859 - with the F. Rossi factory via an aerial overpass ; the weaving was replaced with the "Shed for the workers" created by the engineer E.L. Pergameni and still visible on the left side of the elegant entrance gate.
The work is by the #Vicenza architect A. Caregaro Negrin while the care of the notable variety of plants bears the signature of Marco Restiglian of the Botanical Garden of Padua. The architect was able to skilfully insert new elements that already existed in the context: the two corner houses facing the current Via Pasubio, the octagonal turret with a pagoda roof and the sixteenth-century church of San Rocco (rearranged in neo-Gothic style) at the top of the hill. The turret once closed the building present here and intended for weaving, and was once intended to contain the "piss" based on the custom of using urine in the wool manufacturing process due to its high percentage of ammonia; it was then transformed into an aviary tower following the traditional canons of the landscape and of the #Venetian rural villa.
On the right side of the garden we observe the Jacquard #Theater which extends towards the rear part of the park; the building was initially intended as a home for the caretaker, stable, warehouse, but underwent a transformation in 1869, becoming a multipurpose theater hall capable of accommodating 800 people.
The Lombardy style faรงade is enriched by twelve medallions, which represent illustrious people from Scledo. Directing your gaze to the left you are captured by the concave-shaped greenhouse which almost seems to be a curtain that conceals the nymphaeum behind; the entire rear area is characterized by a system of caves, short walkways and steps, belvedere balconies and populated by mythological figures.
The precise location of this #garden - with its wealth of plant essences, including exotic ones, finds a harmonious insertion between the old historic center of the city and the development area of the factories near the Roggia. In 1899, a bronze statue by the Milanese sculptor Achille Alberti was placed in this splendid romantic garden, representing the well-known 19th century entrepreneur Alessandro Rossi from Scledo in old age.
