Side-by-Side: Jeff Minter's Visualizers (NUON + Jaguar CD + XBOX 360)
This is a brief video showing off three of Jeff Minter's game console visualizers. Each of these three were pretty cutting-edge for the time in terms of visualizations and it's interesting to see the evolution of them, from the Jaguar CD's VLM, to the NUON's VLM2, to the XBOX 360's "Neon".
Backing tune is "Gulliver Road" by the Japanese rock/metal group, "The Cycle". Each stream of video was taken while working to this exact track, so any reaction to the music that you see is indeed to the actual song playing.
For those unfamiliar with some of these platforms, these visualizers were built-in to each respective console and were available at each system's respective launch. Here's a quick availability timeline to put the overall improvements from revision to revision into perspective:
Atari Jaguar CD: 1995
VM Labs' NUON: 2000
Microsoft XBOX 360: 2005
It should be noted that the Jaguar CD's VLM doesn't change patterns on its own (or if it does it takes a while to do it), so I was changing the patterns manually as the video footage was being captured. I did not touch the NUON and XBOX 360 visualizers and any pattern changes you see were done automatically on their own. I currently only have a remote control for the NUON and not a game pad so I don't remember if the patterns are changeable on the fly like with the Jaguar, but on the XBOX 360 you can change the patterns at will as well as control the camera with the analog sticks.
