73The Story of Sleeping Dogs and Why We'll Probably Never See a Sequel
Sleeping Dogs is a 2012 game developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix that I absolutely love still to this day. I wanted to revisit this classic in 2024 and talk about the gameplay, the development and overall the sad story of why we will probably never see a sequel to this game.
With the plan initially being to have the game published by Activision, that fell apart towards the end because Activision claimed the game wouldn't compete with the likes of Rockstar's GTA and Red Dead Redemption but in all honesty there isn't much that competes with those even to this day as Rockstar is a giant when it comes to open world story games.
After originally funding extra employees to work on Sleeping Dogs which was called Black Lotus to begin with, Activision cancelled the whole thing to eventually sell it to Square Enix without the True Crime IP which took it from Black Lotus to True Crime: Hong Kong to the Sleeping Dogs we know and love.
