Unboxing the Analogue DAC - Digital to Analog Converter for MegaSG, SuperNT, and DUO
I received the Analogue DAC! This was something I put off for a long time, but now that I'll be utilizing three Analogue FPGA consoles, I figured it was worth it to bite the bullet and invest in one of these. Basically what this does is takes the digital (HDMI) signal from any of Analogue's recent consoles and converts it to a usable signal for classic display technologies (CRTs). It supports composite, s-video, and component/RGB SCART.
Music by C418 ("26" and "I Can't Afford Mixing").
Post-unboxing notes:
- I utilized it the same night with the MegaSG and it worked on first try. I have a MiSTer component cable from MiSTer Add-Ons and its pinout is the same as supported by the DAC, so it worked just fine. Picture looked great, however, I have heard mixed results with composite or s-video. I'll have to get cables for those later on and see how it looks on my displays.
- I ran the DAC into a component amplifier (1 in, 4 out) and so I was able to route the signal into my Framemeister, allowing me to stream and play on a CRT at the same time. With the MegaSG jailbreak, I was able to switch games seamlessly without signal drops just like when I do the MegaSG via HDMI. This is important for me because when I use the MiSTer or a real Genesis with flash cart, I get signal drops whenever I switch games. This eventually breaks my capture card. This is a more seamless solution while still being able to play on a CRT. The less headaches when streaming, the better.
- Clarification on the two USB ports. Apparently you plug the Micro w/brick into the DAC and your outlet, and then use the other cable w/o brick, from the USB Type A on the DAC to the USB Micro on the back of your console of choice.
- Regarding 05:24 where I mentioned having to get cables from RetroAccess, what I meant is the 32X cables. They are the only ones that make that cable if you want to use a real Sega 32X with the MegaSG (one of the big reasons to own a DAC!).
