Killing zombies on a tropical island is a pretty cool idea, yeah? Yeah! Dead Island is the first game to really do it, yeah? Nope! Enter Isle of the Dead, a first person shooter/point and click adventure game (you read that right) from 1993 by Rainmaker Software. The game's kinda unique, even today with the flood of zombie games on the market. It has old school horror survival elements (limited ammo and health), a day and night cycle (I assume. I didn't play it long enough to find out. You're warned to "beware the night demons" though. Could just be a time limit.), actual walking dead rather than infected, a stereotypical mad scientist, an extremely cheesy B movie quality, and zombie kids. Let me say that last one again. Zombie kids. And they're not just shuffling around in the background, they're actual enemies that you can kill. This game not only gives you zombie children, but lets you blow them away or hack them up. You couldn't get away with that shit today. Hell, I'm surprised that Uwe Boll got away with the shootout scene in the Postal movie where all the kids got shot! Anyway...

The control choice is, well, interesting to say the least. You know how most FPS games of this era have buttons to shoot, use/open, and strafe? Not this one! You just get to attack with space, strafe with Ctrl, and pick things up with G. Yeah. You have to actively pick up objects in the FPS areas by looking at them and hitting G. How do you open doors and get in to new areas? Why, by looking straight at them for about a second or so. Not good if you're running through zombies The graphics are notably cartoony, but smoothly animated. Especially the death scenes, which I should have recorded. There's also voice acting which has surprisingly good sound quality. There's an odd popping sound at the beginning of each piece though.
