At the It's Show Time Apple Event, Apple announced Apple TV Plus, the Apple Card titanium credit card, Apple Arcade, Apple News+ and more! In this video I break down all of the announcements that Apple made, and give my thoughts on which are good and which are underwhelming.
Apple News+
Apple is adding newspapers and magazines to its News app for iOS and macOS and allowing you to access them all for the all-you-can-eat monthly price of $9.99. Apple News+ requires iOS 12.2, which was released at the conclusion of the event, so if you want to give it a try just update your devices. While the service is $9.99 a month, the first month is completely free to try out.
Apple Card
The next service that Apple announced is its new credit card, which they call Apple Card. Oddly enough, it’s both a credit card that exists digitally on your iPhone while simultaneously also being forged from a sheet of titanium. The company is looking to be unique with their credit card offering in many ways, starting from the application process which takes place right on the iPhone. Once approved, the card is instantly stored in the Wallet app and can be used right away. The Wallet app is also where you’ll view your statements, balance, rewards, and payment due dates. The app will also convert transactions into human readable form, tagging locations and retailers.
Apple Arcade
The next service Apple gave us a look at is Apple Arcade. Apple Arcade is a game subscription service that provides users with access to over 100 games that are exclusive to the service - that's right, the entire catalogue is not only exclusive to iOS and macOS, but exclusive to the Apple Arcade service itself. Rather than another game streaming service like Google Stadia, Apple Arcade users install their games through the App Store, so that they can be played anywhere without the need for an Internet connection.
Apple TV Channels
An update to the TV app is coming, and will include a new feature called Apple TV Channels. If you’ve seen channels on Amazon Prime video, this is similar. You’re able to pick and choose which TV channels you want to pay for a la carte - or that you get access to with the cable subscription that you pay for. Examples of channels they showed are Starz, HBO, Showtime, CBS All Access, and Epix.
Apple TV+
And lastly, and likely the biggest news of the day, is the announcement of Apple TV+. This is Apple’s new subscription video service that will house all of the company’s first-party original programming. Apple used the bulk of the time here to have a bunch of the actors, directors, and producers of the upcoming shows and movies take the stage to talk a little about their projects - these included people like Oprah Winfrey, Jason Momoa, Steven Spielberg, Steve Carell, and Big Bird.
Aside from knowing who Apple has on board though, we didn’t get a lot of information. No trailers for any of the shows or movies. No pricing for what the company will charge to get access to their original content. No solid release dates either. What we do know is that Apple is spending about $2 billion on original content to start filling up its service, and that it will be launching this fall - I assume at the September event along with the next iPhone.
