Armed Seven | Schmup Collection | Wii U Playthrough
This game is one of four included in the late Wii U release – Shmup collection.
The first thing I thought of when seeing this game was Cybernator on the SNES.
You control a mech that you can lock your fire angled up, down, or middle. I kept it in the middle for the vast majority.
At the beginning of the game, you choose your weapon, sub weapon, and special. I didn’t know what to choose so I changed the first weapon then accidently continued without getting the chance to look at the others. Little did I know that this is the only change in the game you have to choose your weapons. Fortunately, I think I was lucky. My main weapon was a spread shot which got most of the enemies on the screen. My sub weapon fired missiles forwards which compensated the lack of power in the spread gun. The special was a big heavy beam, that recharges over time. This is very useful for the bosses because the spread shit does hardly anything so it’s just a matter of waiting for the special to charge up.
The levels are very short, but it’s good to get a break often.
This game is very easy. There are points where there are a lot of bullets on the screen but it’s not a one hit kill like in the other game in the collection – SATAZIUS. For the entire game I thought that you were allowed 3 hits because that’s what the shield bar shown. You carry the same bar over to the next level but you can replenish it by collecting power ups. There were a few close calls where I thought I was going to lose all my shields but that didn’t happen until the last boss. This is where I found out that the shield wasn’t my health. There is another bar called ‘Life’. I thought it was the number of lives I had remaining but it turns out that this is your health. So, I had another 5 hits left to complete the last boss, which I didn’t need. I didn’t lose any lives or any main health throughout the whole game on my first playthrough. Now that’s an easy game.
Granted, I did choose the ‘Easy’ difficulty mode, but Shmups are NEVER easy on easy mode. They are barely doable. SATAZIUS is rock hard on Easy and it’s a game on the same disc!
I must caveat that I imagine if I didn’t have the spread gun, I think it would have been harder.
EDIT - when I played ARMED 7 DX on Normal with different guns, I didn’t last past the 2nd level. So yes, the gun selection is very important.
This game feels a bit dated but is decent enough. At only 20 minutes long, it’s a game that wouldn’t warrant a full release but is fine in this collection.
