Ask GN 30: Does the VRM Fan Matter? FreeSync or GTX 1070?
In this episode of Ask GN, we talk about FreeSync w/ RX 480 vs. GTX 1070, VRM blower fans, the 6700k vs. 6600k, and revisiting older GPUs for benchmarks
0:26 RezzaNL: "Hi GN, Your custom Gtx 1080 hybrid mod inspired me to do same. I am pretty pleased with the result. It doesn't go over 45c OC and under load. My questions: How important is the cooling for other components on gpu such as vram? Does the hybrid fan really help with anything? or just for show??"
4:28 Aaron Cox: "Hi Steve. I am considering purchasing an LG 29UM68-P which is 21:9 1080p with Freesync and new GPU to pair with it. Is it better for me to get an RX480 and leverage the freesync capabilities of the monitor, or a 1070 and use its greater raw power to output higher fps (and have a card I can use for longer a lifespan before needing an upgrade)? More generally, what purchasing behavior would you suggest to people when shopping for cards; is the old "put the most money into your GPU" still valid etc? Great channel. Thanks, Goldilocks."
8:14 FD: "In your experience which component(s) are more prone to fail from voltage issues?I only ask this because I had my fan/audio cables meltdown on my R5 case and I was astonished. Out of all my parts I never thought my case would be an issue.?"
10:13 Matthew Osborne: "Hey Steve, when looking at your review video for the I7-6700K I noticed that there were no comparisons to the 6600k. Is there a reason why these CPUs were not directly compared to each other and will GN be making these comparisons for future generations of CPUs?
I was looking for the difference in frame-rate lows between the two chips after digital foundry had mention that the lows is where the I7 shows the largest value, but didn't provide any graphs.?"
12:02 Tamzid Jayed: "How do you guys actually calculate the 1% and 0.1% lows? By plotting a frame vs. time graph and finding manually or do you guys use some kind of software? (Sorry if it's a stupid question)?"
13:10 Deivian Dice: "Will you ever compare this generations hardware to that of two generations ago e.g. R9 280 or GTX 760? This seems to be the point where upgrading is financially plausable for what you get rather than upgrading from a 380 to a 480.?"
