Assassin’s Creed Valhalla continues the direction Ubisoft took, to make the series into a full fledged open world RPG. It re-creates the Dark Ages England and a small part of Norway. Also the game, just like the trilology, re-creates the mythological paradise of the source material, norsemen. Valhalla and Asgard. And It was so satisfying to fight with the gods, and see events I’ve only read about in Edda unfold. And if you get the DLCs you get more maps.About the accuracy, the game is mostly accurate, but it has compromises for the sake of fun and social agenda. Though, this time, social agenda was masked, and doesn’t feel shoved in your face. There aren’t female mercenaries on your back and female soldiers patrolling like in Oddysey. There are some strong female portrayed as warriors and clan chiefs. It’s not accurate, but it’s okay. I didn’t feel the social agenda shoved in my face this time. Other compromises where in the weather system. The map is static. It doesn’t change seasons, still, you get all four seasons when you roam the map. Some places are locked to be autumn, others locked to show summer, others to show only winter, so that the map is more visually diverse. Also for the sake of fun, roman ruins are huge. On the technical part, Valhalla is a glitchy mess. There was no gaming session without a handful of glitches or crashes. Also the looks are okay. It looks like a PC set on medium settings. But what I didn’t like are the lens flares. It’s understandable that the PS4 doesn’t have ray tracing, so you can’t expect much from the light, even so, the PS4 struggles with the game, and the lense flares look ugly in the game. I wish they found a different method to imitate sunlight passing through hills and leaves. It looks too exaggerated. In gameplay, you get all elements the series got, plus more. New to the game are cursed parts of the map, where you need to destroy the source of the curse to free the spot, and flyting matches. Flyting matches are like freestyle rap battles. You battle in rhymes. Also new are the raids. You can feel like a true viking, and call your boat, park it near a place of wealth, and raid villages and monasteries like a true viking. This is one of the best parts of the game, as it makes you feel like a true viking. There are drinking games, dice games, you can pet animals, get tatoos. In rest there are hidden collectibles, songs to catch like in Black Flag, roman tombs to explore, caves, legendary animals to defeat. And I love the new mission objectives when you raid huge establishments. The mission objectives are varied, and I had a lot of fun playing. Also now the game has detective secquences that look like this. Also the game has the difficulty setting where the game doesn’t give you a hud, nor tells you what you have to do. In that difficulty setting you have to listen to what characters say and get along that way. It’s immersive, but hardcore. I played the game showing me where I have to go.
The game has improvements too at least. At least when you call your horse the horse doesn’t run away from you like in Oddysey. The leveling system is more annoying. If you want an ability you have to unlock dots with level up points, and if you want a good ability you have to collect it from the map. The story is interesting, and I found it to be good. Though, I think you will need some context when it comes to the science fiction part of the game. In the end, like all AC games, you get to alien tech and stuff, and Desmond is mentioned, and if you haven’t played the other ones, you won’t understand much of the ending. Or at least that’s what I think. And for those who say that this isn’t an Assassin’s Creed game. It’s just the title. You kill The Order of the Anciencts, which later got to be called Templar Order. And even if Eivor, you character isn’t an Assassin, he kills the cultists for the Assassin’s. So he still assassinates. And Eivor’s story is relevant in the grand picture of the Assassin’s Creed plot. So this is an Assassin’s Creed game too, even if most of the game you do viking stuff. Overall the game is great! But it’s in my opinion a step down from Odyssey, the previous game. As it has a smaller and emptier map, has some weird graphics, and is full of bugs. The raids are fun, and the game has the same solid Assassin’s Creed gameplay. So this one too, is an amazing game, that if you like Vikings, or historically accurate games, or you like medieval styled RPGs, or just want a good game that will be worth every penny get this one. The main story takes around 60 hours to finish. At it’s price point, you’ll have what to play for what you’ve spent on the game. I recommend it, but I’m biased here. I’ve been a fan of the series since the first game. And I’ve completed every game. But I still think that most people will love the game, as it’s a high quality triple A game. Even if it has plenty of bugs.
