BIOGRAPHY OF FOOTBALL: Bill Shankly
Bill Shankly’s playing career was played largely in Preston and his managerial career was spent early on scrabbling around in the financially mismanaged Third Division North clubs of Grimsby, Workington and Carlisle. However, he got his big break, promoted by Huddersfield Town from assistant to manager. However, his squabbles with the board as with the aforementioned clubs remained. Shankly gave debuts to Denis Law and Ray Wilson at the Leeds Road Stadium, but under threat of his players being sold from under his nose, he moved to Second Division’s Liverpool. Melwood, Anfield and the entirety of Liverpool’s philosophy needed renovating. 15 years later, Shankly gave Liverpool success domestically and in Europe, Liverpool FC’s future shaped entirely by Shankly.
