The Breath of Fire games only share their two main characters, blue-haired dragon boy Ryu and angel-winged Nina, throughout the series. Otherwise, the games are completely independent and are no way related to each other. The second game in the franchise is a clear upgrade over the original, featuring a lengthier quest, a more in-depth storyline and more interesting mechanisms, such as soul unions. However, it stumbles in its difficult. The SNES original is ridiculously grindy and difficult, making it a very hard game to get into for modern gamers. The GBA port of the game I'm playing here is much, much better in that regard, as it doubles the amount of experience points and money you make from random encounters. This makes the game much more palatable on GBA, but it is STILL quite challenging, so imagine that! However, of course, the GBA version is weaker in the graphic and sound departments.

There is a staggering amount of grammar mistakes or typos in the game's script, to the point where it's quite comical. There's even a question an NPC asks you at one point where you have to answer no to mean yes and yes to mean no. D'oh! The GBA version also features a notable glitch that can randomly happen after a certain event in the game. It happened to me and I had to restart the dungeon after my game froze! Thankfully, it only happened once. Check part 4 of this playthrough past the 3-hour mark if you want to see it.

Beyond that, the game is very similar to the original, and I have not much to say about it that wasn't already said in the description of the original game (see playlist). One notable change is that Ryu's dragon transformations act as some sort of spell now, being one-time attacks, unlike the first game where Ryu remained a dragon for the entirety of the battle. There are also NPCs you can recruit to come to your village, but some of them are clearly better than others, and since choices are irreversible, you may want to use a guide if you want the very best for your party. Soul unions let you upgrade your characters' stats, but sometimes their appearance doesn't change, or they only change colors, while sometimes the characters go through radical transformations. Spar, for example, has the most. The game frequently requires you to swap out characters for others, which could potentially lead to under-leveled characters being forced to come out, but it hasn't been a problem in my playthrough. The game features three different endings. I very briefly showcase the SNES version at the end of part 8.

Overall, I had fun with Breath of Fire II, and I think it's a fine game, but it can be a little tedious and cryptic in places.
