Can you game in 8K with a GTX 1660 in Fortnite?

In this video I’m seeing if it is possible to do 8K gaming on a Windows PC using a 6GB Nvidia GTX 1660 graphics card using Fortnite. The CPU used is an Intel i3 10105F with 16GB of 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM. While this is only a low end CPU, using a high end CPU such as an Intel i9 13900K, wouldn’t really make any difference as the GPU is already massively maxed out.

As you can see at the start of the video the resolution for the GTX 1660 is set to 7680x4320 which is 8K UHD and the refresh rate is set to 60 hertz, which is basically 60 FPS, or 60 frames per second for the Windows GUI and output.

Once in Fortnite I set the game resolution to 7680x4320 which once again is 8K and I also set the frame rate limit to unlimited.

All the granular graphics setting within Fortnite were either turned off or on low. Even adding shadows would have massively reduced the frame rate. I’ve also not used any anti aliasing or temporal super resolution settings, as these too would also be too much for the GPU render and would again reduce the frame rate. So essentially what I’m doing is to test the full rasterised graphics resolution and rendering for the game.

To start off with I use the Fortnite graphics for the 3D resolution setting set to 100%. This essentially gives us maximum render resolution for graphics rasterisation. I then step through and reduce to 3D resolution setting to 80%, 50%, 30% and finally the lowest setting of 10% at various points through the test.

This reduction in the 3D resolution basically drops the internal game rendering resolution for the rasterisation of the graphics while still having an 8K output, all be it an upscaled output at the point of reducing the 3D resolution. However, because the start off is so high, as in 8K, even fairly heavy reductions in the 3D resolution still produce a nice detailed output because the 3D resolution is still high resolution.

When reducing the 3D resolution the frame rate or FPS gets better and goes higher. To be honest, I was actually quite shocked at how good the game looked when reducing the 3D resolution and gaining higher frame rates. It was very responsive, looked good and easily playable at around 50% 3D resolution.

Here’s the chapters for test:

00:00 Intro and PC settings
01:34 Fortnite settings
03:09 100% 3D resolution
07:08 80% 3D resolution
08:34 50% 3D resolution
11:18 30% 3D resolution
12:45 10% 3D resolution

Here's some info on how I done the game capture:

As the GTX 1660 only does 8K on Display Port because its HDMI version is too low, I had to do some serious messing about to record the Display Port output.

I had to add a Thunderbolt PCIe interface to the computer’s motherboard, this is actually a feature of some Gigabyte boards. Then loop one of the 1660’s Display Port outputs into the Thunderbolt interface, which merges the Display Port signal from the 1660 with the Thunderbolt ports. Then use one of the Thunderbolt ports from the interface for the video output.

I then had to use an 8K USB C to HDMI 2.1 adapter connected to one of the Thunderbolt ports on the interface to connect and convert 8K Display Port to 8K HDMI 2.1. This 8K HDMI output was then connected to the 8K input on my HDMI splitter and then downscaled from the splitter in 4K to my Atomos Ninja V in 4K. This would have been way easier if the 1660 had a HDMI 2.1 output 😂

The game capture files from the Ninja, which were recording in ProRes 422 HQ, were then imported into DaVinci Resolve on my MacBook Pro M1 Max. The project was set to 8K 60FPS and then exported to H.265 at 300Mb/s and uploaded to YouTube.
