Casting Lead Sling Glandes (from scrap)
Almost perfectly aerodynamic 2oz (56g) sling ammo i.e. "glandes" from old sheet roofing lead (effectively pure lead). This is as good as it gets for sling ammo, basically giant slugs that lose very little of their energy to the atmosphere as they follow a nearly ballistic trajectory. Similar to a high ballistic coefficient G7 projectile. Highly resemblant of an optimised airfoil. A capable slinger (like me) using a similarly optimised sling (like one of mine), can achieve a muzzle velocity approaching 100 m/s. At an ideal release angle of 45 degrees and a rifled release, that means over 600m of distance with these drag-free projectiles.
Scrap lead and some old wood for fuel. Small outlay for some equipment (moulds that can be reused indefinitely), and some time per projectile to slightly modify shape from standard fishing weight. Whole process can be streamlined for an impressive production rate.
I refined 20kg of scrap lead for almost as much in processed ingots. 20,000g/56g equals about 350 glandes. Tiny fraction of the cost of lead fishing weights, and so much better.
Small part of a larger project.
