Casting Winks, Hiding Kin| Week of Spoopy| Let’s Play Hide & Shriek w/ Kin
Kin and I are students of magic from the opposing schools of Little Springs High, and Innsmouth Academy, and we’re about to honor an ancient tradition: Sneaking into school after midnight, turning invisible and scaring the hell out of each other! Watch as we bumble around blindly picking up runes and looking for little orbs and attempt to trap each other in our traps! (But mostly we just trap ourselves…) Nobody ever said we were good at magic. The goal to Hide and Shriek is pretty simple, just pick up the magic runes scattered around to cast spells on objects as traps, and then wait till the opposing player wanders by and use your shriek ability to scare them silly, all while looking for strange magic orbs to take back to your altar for extra points. You have 10 minutes to scare your opponent 3 times in a row or collect the most points.

THE GAME IN A NUTSHELL
Hide and Shriek is a 1v1 horror game where two players battle it out and try to scare each other half to death. But there’s a twist: you’re both invisible! Place traps and use spells to mess with your opponent’s head and figure out where they are, then scare the pants off them! There are two win conditions: either you scare them three times in a row, or if the time runs out, the player with the most points win.
STARTING THE DUEl
After finding an opponent to play with the game spawns you into a random room in Little Springs High. You should immediately try to familiarize yourself with the room you are in. You can open cabinets by walking up to them, holding down LMB on the door and moving the mouse in the direction of the arrow. Use CTRL to crouch down to peek into cabinets close to the floor.
Be careful when opening cupboards and cabinets. The hinges squeak if you open them too quickly, and slamming them shut will definitely give away your position.
In the room with you is an altar, colored red or blue. When you start the game will tell you what color you are, and you can also see it next to your name at the top of the screen. By bringing similarly colored orbs to the altar you gain points that can help you win the match when time runs out. We recommend placing one orb on the altar when you start out, to give you a good running start pointwise. Just be quick about it, or the altar will teleport to a different room!
Left click on an orb and you’ll pick it up automatically. Right click to drop it. The altar will teleport to a different location once you place an orb, so you’ll need to go searching for it when dropping your next orb. If you struggle with finding your altar, the orb will eventually point you in the right direction.
Now it’s time to start searching for your opponent!
Move around the school and be aware of your surroundings. Doors opening and closing, the sound of cupboards being opened, objects flying in midair and traps being sprung are definite signs of another player. If you’re in a hurry you can sprint by holding Shift, but keep in mind that it makes you visible. If you see a floating blue flame fly by, that’s the other player using sprint!
THE RUNES
Scattered around the school are special runes that can be picked up and used to cast spells. Simply click on the runes to pick them up and hit E to cast your spell. Runes come in both defensive and offensive types and can do things like magically lock doors, place traps on the floor, engulf your opponent in darkness or even teleport them to a different location.
At the start of the match you will get a glimpse of which runes will be hidden around the school. Not all runes will appear in every match.
By combining two or three different runes you can cast even more powerful spells. Try to go for the level 2 or 3 combo spells rather than hurriedly casting the basic spells whenever you get them. Check the Grimoire in the main menu to see which rune combinations result in which spells (but note that only spells you have already cast will show up there, so it will be populated as you play).
THE SCREAMS
You will find the Scream Meter at the bottom of your screen. This meter will slowly fill up over time and once it’s full you can hit the spacebar to scream at your opponent. Only use it when you think they’re nearby! Once it’s been used, whether you hit your target or not, it will have to recharge again. Spell books and certain rune combinations can increase your recharge speed, so be on the lookout for those..
As you participate in matches you’ll start unlocking new screaming heads, which can be decked out with various accessories and extras to make them as silly or terrifying as you’d like.
