Colton Tooley has been identified as the suspect behind a shooting incident at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, on September 28, 2010. Authorities say the 19-year-old Tooley fired several shots with an AK-47 assault rifle on campus before heading into the Perry-Castaneda Library, where he apparently committed suicide. No one else was injured and authorities were said to be investigating Tooley's motive for the violence.
The shooting incident led to several tense hours in Austin, Texas, as authorities locked down the UT-Austin campus and warned students and staff at the school to "stay indoors." Reports at the time indicated the possibility of a second suspect in the case. Several hours later, however, police indicated they believed Tooley was the lone suspect and an "all clear" was given.
The question everyone seems to be asking today? Who was Colton Tooley? Tooley was a sophomore at the University of Texas in Austin. He was majoring in mathematics. ABC News says Tooley was concentrating in actuarial sciences. An Austin TV station, KVUE, reported that Tooley lived in South Austin with his family. He graduated seventh in his class at Austin's Crockett High School in 2009. KVUE says Tooley's former teachers described him as "brilliant, meticulous and respectful."
Police were seen searching Tooley's home several hours after the UT-Austin incident. Reports say authorities removed some items from the house - but it wasn't immediately known what was taken. On the evening of September 28, 2010, a man identified as Tooley's cousin emerged from the home and offered a brief statement. The man, who identified himself only as "Marcus," described Tooley as "an excellent student who wouldn't, or couldn't hurt a fly." Marcus went on to say "if he was depressed we wouldn't know it," adding that "this is a great shock to me and our family." He said "there was nothing...that would lead any of us to believe that this would take place."
