While I have no idea what triggered this, I'm beginning to understand a few things about it.

Here is some chronology:

Carry the nova blaster away with 30 pikmin (7 yellows, 23 reds).
Pick up 2 bombs.
Ran into some posies on my way to bomb the ACB gate.
(I'm not saying posies caused this since I've seen a similar effect where the player had absolutely no pikmin in his party).
The nova blaster suddenly disappeared and my frame rate lowered.
The graphical glitch started.
I notice that it appears to be a yellow pikmin and the nova blaster stretched.
The nova blaster is bobbing as if still in the being carried animation.
The yellow spike remains motionless.
The graphical glitch is not top layer; it can be seen clipping into entities and walls.
I notice that the part is way OOB.
I attempt to get closer to the part, which is to say in the ACB den.
If I look directly down the stream (parallel to the flat spike) my frame rate is fine.
The part appears to have slowly moved even further oob.
I end the day.
The part returns to normal the next day.
