Some Cuphead on PS4 gameplay, this time from World 2, featuring 2 bosses and another run and Gun level.

Oh Gawwwwd, that fucking clown was so hard to beat! Took me about an hour and half. Baroness Von Bon Bon wasn't exactly a pushover either. I've been reading a few comments on the Internet about whether the game's too hard or not and most of the well written pieces that say it are, seem to typically be drowned out by all the utter cretins that just mindlessly bleat 'Git gud' (What it is with those fucktards, do they think they're adding in some Shakespearian level of witty insight to the comments???)

One particular comment that I thought was interesting was on Reddit where someone mentioned 'The lie that indie devs try to tell themselves is that their games are difficult as homage to games of old is bs in its purest form because most of the best old games were nowhere near as difficult as stuff like Cuphead. I play both old and new games and most of my favorites are challenging but not insanely difficult.'

I 100% agree with this. My gaming history dates back to the Sega Master System and the Megadrive and there were games there that were challenging, but not so insanely difficult that I wasn't able finish them. Stuff like Wonderboy 3 the Dragon's Trap, Double Dragon, R-Type and Golden Axe on the Master System and Revenge of Shinobi, ESWAT, Ghould n Ghosts, Strider, Thunder Force 3 and 4, Truxton, Rocket Knight Adventures and Shadow Dancer on the Megadrive, games that eased you in and didn't start really ramping the difficulty up until you started to get near the end.

I honestly think the Cuphead developers lost the plot a bit with this game's difficulty. I've seen a lot of people argue that, like an old game, you've got to memorise the boss patterns and adapt to them. But there seems to be something of an RNG element to parts of the attacks, which to me feels like there are times when 2 different attacks happen and it's impossible to not die - like, for example, when the Rollercoaster appears during Beppi's third form and you need to jump over the top of it, and then that might just be at the exact same time he shoots the horseshoes at you. I couldn't find any way to survive that, even using the smoke bomb teleportation. Because of this, memorisation alone isn't enough and, to me at least, a lot of the deaths felt cheap.

I don't know if I'm going to end up seeing this one through to the end. I want to because the art style's just so fantastic, but knowing that each boss is going to be such a grindy ballache is really putting me off. Juice does not feel like it's worth the squeeze as they say. And apparently, I haven't even got on to the REALLY difficult bosses yet...
