Dangun Feveron/Fever SOS, 1998 Cave/Nihon System
Bullet hell vertically scrolling shooter, but with a cool number of twists. First of all there are multiple settings you can change even before you start your game-- 1) you get to choose from 3 ships (each with a different secondary bomb), 2) you choose what your charged shot will be like (lock-on homing rapid fire shot, bomb, or rotating bullets surrounding you), and select from 4 different speeds (I recommend either of the 2 fastest; this definitely can earn the name "bullet hell"). The high score list is daunting for a reason-- it's pretty high! And you can beat a level and find your score isn't very impressive.. the way to reach high scores is to collect-- get this-- falling Disco dancers that fall through space when certain enemies are shot! That's right; this game has a crazy fascination with Disco! Some of the music, the bomb attacks, and the graphics involve that groovy 70s craze! By collecting falling Disco dancers without missing for as long as you can, the value of the enemies can increase greatly, and your bonus at the end of the level (after you beat the boss) can rise dramatically! You will notice a number appear over the dancers as you collect them, indicating how many in a row you've collected. You can increase the power of your shot (the regular one if you didn't charge it) with power-up icons from certain destroyed enemies, and you can also get extra bombs, weapon max or 1up icons as well. 2 special tricks can give you new gameplay options: By inserting a credit at the Title screen and pressing Down, Up, Right, Left, Up, Down, Left and Right you will select a NEW fighter, which can't charge a shot or use bombs, but can switch its radius of 3-way shot (really kind of lame). You can also insert a coin at the title screen and hold A+B while pressing Start. Now select your fighter, charge shot and speed and you will enter TIME ATTACK MODE! Here, you get INFINITE fighters while trying to just get as many points as you can until the time runs out. If you thought getting on the high score list in the regular game was tough enough.. it's SUPER daunting here! A totally new terrain can have hidden enemies that may appear and can help your scoring endeavor a bit, but collecting dancers without missing becomes SUPER critical here.
