Unboxing and introductory review of the DataTale 4-bay Thunderbolt RAID. Setup and tested as RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID10 using four 2 TB 7200rpm 6Gb/s Toshiba hard drives.

RAID 0 speeds reached almost 600 MB/s.
RAID 1 speeds reached about 180 MB/s.
RAID 10 speeds reached about 260 MB/s write, 360 MB/s read.

What is RAID 10?

This unit can also do JBOD and HyperDuo modes. HyperDuo uses SSDs and HDDs to create an optimized system similar to an Apple Fusion drive.

The RAID is whisper-quiet, showing approximately 5db of noise.

NOTE: September 2013 software update still isn't quite feature-complete (the email and logging isn't fully functional). Performance has so far been trouble-free.

NOTE: Features have been updated to be complete and logging works. Even in September 2015, with the RAID mostly full, it still performs at above tested speeds.

*Disclosure: Oyen Digital has provided me with a DataTale Thunderbolt RAID chassis for purposes of providing a review. I received it with no obligations. I will attempt to keep the blog post updated with on-going performance notes, good or bad.
