We might retry this later (and we're likely gonna try the zip ties to see if they're easier), but I think the key problem is that the angles are all different when you're fat (as both of us are). Your arms don't come down in the same way and they don't come down with the same force -- plus, the tape itself rolled over and wasn't putting tension on the part that needed to break.
Maybe zip ties really *will* be easier to break.
