Edius 8 Crashing Editing Apple Variable Frame Rate VFR HEVC H.265 .MOV Footage From iPad Pro 2020
In this video I'm showing Edius 8 video editing software by Grass Valley, crashing when I edit video footage from Apple devices.
The Apple devices' video footage that I'm having problems with are video files from the iPad Pro 2020 and the iPhone SE 2020, although I've had the same issues with earlier iPad and iPhone footage.
The Edius crash only seems to happen after I've edited any of the clips in the Edius timeline. If I play any of the footage from the bin via the preview output or from the timeline unedited then there are no crashes. This is of course impractical as all clips will need some editing, even if it's only top and tailing of the clips.
The Apple codec is H.265 or HEVC and is in a .MOV container/wrapper and is VFR or variable frame rate. There maybe an issue with the h.265 codec parameters that Apple are using for their video recording and encoding, although you'd expect this to be an issue with an unedited file as well as an edited one. Due to the crash only seemingly to affect clips that Edius has edited, it does appear on first glance that the issue is Edius.
The edit of the video files from the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and the GoPro Hero8 Black didn't cause any problems and the S7 footage is basically the same as the iPad Pro footage as far as it being H.265 HEVC.
At first I thought that this problem only happened with 24FPS footage at 4K UHD but it's happening to other frame rate and resolution footage.
As mentioned in the video, I've replicated this exact crash scenario on different hardware configurations using Edius.
Has anyone else using Edius 8 noticed this or similar problems?
Does this issue cause crashes with Edius 9?
If anyone from Grass Valley comes across this video could you please let me know if this will be a problem with Edius 10? Has there been testing of the Apple codec with Edius X?
If anyone can help me with this issue I'd really appreciate it.
As soon as Grass Valley release a trial version of Edius X I will test for this crash scenario.
Hopefully this has all been user error on my part and if so, I will do another video informing Edius editors and users of any errors on my part and any fix or solution to the problem with Edius crashing when editing Apple HEVC codec video footage that I've shown in this video.
