This is episode 22 in a series I'm putting out on popular and powerful endgame uniques.
Cloak of Defiance has been good for a while, but in the Ultimatum league, it is the single most used unique body armor among very high level (98-100) characters.
It's an uncommon drop, with no way to realistically target farm it. SSF players will need to rely upon luck or craft a similar rare.
It provides mana, mana recovery, the 'Mind Over Matter' keystone from the passive tree, and an effect which does the same thing as Mind Over Matter but that stacks with it.
Acquisition methods:
- Luck
- Use Chance Orbs on Lacquered Garb
- Craft a rare item that substitutes or surpasses it (see below)
How to craft a similar but weaker item (mostly for SSF):
- Allocate Mind Over Matter on the passive tree.
- Find a Shaper influenced chest, item level 80 or higher. Craft with Lucent + Pristine fossils until you hit the mod '10% of damage taken from life before mana' with OK other mods. Apply a benchcraft to 'finish' the item.
How to craft a similar but better item (budget: 5ex if you go for 'normal' tiers, 30ex for Elevated versions; this is powergamer only in SSF)
Acquire the following:
- 1 Awakener's Orb
- 1 chest armour, item level 80+ with the Heist enchant "+10-15% effect of mana modifiers" and a manageable drawback tied to that enchant.
- 1 Crusader's Exalted Orb
- 1 Shaper chest armor
- A small bunch of fossils
- (Optional) an average of 4 Maven's Orbs
Preparing the Crusader side:
Prepare the enchanted chest by making it rare (alchemy orb) and applying the Crusader Exalt. Optimally this chest is ilvl 86, but 80+ is 'good enough'.
Roll the enchanted chest using 3-socket resonators (Lucent, Dense, Pristine) until it meets one of these conditions:
(Budget version): Exactly ONE Crusader Mod which is '12-15% increased maximum mana'. Note: make sure you don't have '9-11% increased mana' with a perfect roll that becomes 12% due to your enchant.
(Maven version): Exactly TWO Crusader Mods which include '12-15% increased maximum mana'. Again make sure that you don't have a tier 2 roll that reads as 12% because of the enchant.
Apply a Maven's Orb and hope. If you are lucky, you now have a 16-18% increased max mana chest with no other influence mods - if not, ouch, you need to restart this step.
Preparing the Shaper side:
Roll the enchanted chest using 3-socket resonators (Lucent, Dense, Pristine) until:
(Budget version): Exactly ONE Shaper Mod which is '10% of damage taken from life before mana'
(Maven version): Exactly TWO Shaper Mods which include '10% of damage taken from life before mana'.
Apply a Maven's Orb and hope. If you are lucky, you now have an 11-15% Mind Over Matter chest with no other influence mods - if not, ouch. Restart this step.
Awakener Orb:
Make sure to click the awakener orb FIRST, the item WITHOUT the Heist enchant second, then the item WITH the Heist enchant third.
Final Touches:
Consider a 'Veiled Slam' from Aisling, various Harvest crafts, 'metamod' crafting or more.
Then consider ruining the item by putting it in Alva's two-implicit corruption chamber.
