Enjoy Jackson K.'s review of Come Play. Wow, what a scary, intense story based on an electronic tablet from a lost and found box that comes to life. The idea that a children's e-book can be so dark and evil is horrific. Come Play comes out just in time for a spooky scary Halloween movie that I like and recommend.
The main character, Oliver, is autistic, doesn't have any friends and is bullied by his classmates. He is shocked to discover a monster’s story pop up on his electronic tablet one night that comes to life and haunts him and his family. This nightmarish creature named Larry is only visible to humans using electronic screens. It uses the power of electrical lights to come to life.
My favorite part of the film is when Oliver (Azhy Robertson) and his mother Jennifer (Gillian Jacobs) try to outsmart and outrun the monster. Gillian Jacobs, Azhy Robertson and John Gallagher Jr., who plays Oliver’s father all deliver remarkable performances. The special effects are top-notch and very realistic. The music is suspenseful and makes the film come to life, making it scarier and more intense.
The movie is like a fable about everyday lives and our addiction to technology and electronics and how a lonely, bullied boy wants to find a friend. Some suspenseful surprises and twists and turns will keep you shivering on the edge of your seat.
I give this fantastic but scary film, Come Play, 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18. From its frightening and surprising storyline, significant special effects, superb lighting showcasing the creature's dark and light shadows and dramatic music, it will keep you on the edge of your seat. It has some violence and adult tones, but is very enjoyable for anyone over the age of twelve who is looking to be scared. Come Play is available online and in select theaters now. Look for it.
