ExoPlanetViz - View from Earth (built for mixed reality)
NASA SpaceApps Challenge - 2018 10 21 - Team: ET Goes Home
Project: visualizing discovered exo-planets in mixed reality
Step 0: In order to achieve cross-platform support using OpenVR, we used a pre-release build of vNext of MixedRealityToolkit. We spent some time learning the basics of this new paradigm, shifting from the existing HoloToolkit. Shout out to Stephen Hodgson for his tremendous support.
Step 1: Created basic prefabs and scripts to place stars in reference to Earth, allowing users to look at the stars (where Exoplanets are found) in mixed reality from Earth perspective, tap them to display info, such as star and planet names.
Step 2: Extracted real exo-planet data (2944 stars, 3978 planets) from NASA database and loaded this data as input for star positions, names, etc.
The pineapple patch in the sky is real @1:03 and looks so cool. You can also see it from NASA's own Eyes on Exo-Planet app.
