FM21 JOURNEYMAN CHALLENGE - CLUB 5/GRENOBLE FOOT 38 - EP. 1 - In the Shadow of the Alps
4This is a Football Manager 2021 Journeyman Challenge. In an FM21 journeyman, you start off with a lower league squad (LLM) and attempt to move up the FM21 ranks to the Barcelona’s and PSG’s of the world. However, in my journeyman we are doing a twist. As a fan of Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa, I am attempting to mimic Bielsa’s decision making process with regard to how he signs and retains players as well as how he decides to take or leave jobs. Bielsa always seems to be more interested in the fans of the club rather than the prestige level of the club. So that could make for some interesting job moves. Of course there is his personal history as well. Interactions with the board go sour? Well, he’s left a club for less. Fans feel that a player cannot cut it at that level? Bielsa is loyal to the players to perform for him. So there will be less emphasis on transfers and focusing on building and developing the players we already have. But as promotions loom, we will of course not turn away from transfers if they make sense. Of course, Bielsa is pretty particular about the type of player that he will bring in. I am excited to see how this pans out. To add an additional twist to the series I do a “+30” where I vacation for 30 years before starting the game meaning all the players in the game are now newgens and we will create our own Ronaldos’, Messis’ and Ronaldhinos’.
We are on to our fifth club and moving to the Alp in eastern France as a Ligue 1 side has finally opened up. We are settling in to Grenoble Foot 38 where they are historically an upper mid-table side in Ligue 1 but have never scaled that mountain and of course there is the PSG beast that has dominated the league for 50 years.
We do pull a Bielsa and jump ship on Levante mid season after they refuse to upgrade our youth setup Still we brought them to the Champions League and made them competitive in the Spanish First Division so I consider we did our job there. Prior to that we won the treble with Leicester, our third club.
With our first two clubs I have behaved in true El Loco fashion, we left our first club, Volyn Lutsk, in the middle of the night a mere two days before the start of a new season to head off to the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, a side that had just one league win in over a century. We’d finish in the top five both of my seasons there before jumping to Leicester in the Championship. Four years there, two league wins and four trophies and we’ve moved on yet again.
