Forbidden Rite Totems - Four Methods For Crafting Shields - Path of Exile 3.15 Expedition

Of players running Forbidden Rite linked to Spell Totem, a majority are running rare shields and for good reason.
While you should also consider the (expensive) unique shield Atziri's Reflection, and some builds might use Trolltimber Spire or even Tukohama's Fortress, most players using this build are using Shaper-influenced shields with the extremely powerful mod "+1 to maximum totems".
On bases: I suggest the best bases are the 26% or 27% block bases, or the 25% Titanium Spirit Shield. Shields with a non-zero Intelligence requirement are much harder to roll.
Here's four methods for crafting these shields:
Extreme High Budget (~0.5 mirror):
- Start with a high item level scoured Shaper influenced Titanium Spirit Shield
- Alteration until you have the prefix Runic (average 1700 alterations)
- If it has 2 mods, Imprint-Annul until you hit 1 mod
- Imprint-Augment until "recover 3-5% ES on block" or the life equivalent
- Imprint-Regal until you hit Shaper +1 totem (ouch, this step alone will cost 200 Craicic Chimerals on average, on top of over 100 last step)
- Craft further via other means
Medium Budget (1 Awakener Orb + 2-3 exalts, quite deterministic):
- Start with a low ilvl (70+, lower better) Shaper shield with no Int requirement, bad bases are fine
- Alteration or chaos spam until it has the Shaper +1 totem mod and no other Shaper mods. This is Item 1.
- Source Item 2 - an ilvl 85+ Hunter shield of your desired base type (e.g. 85 Hunter Champion Kite Shield)
- Roll Item 2 chasing +2% to all max resistances as a Hunter prefix and no other Hunter mods. Alterations cheaper than chaos usually here.
- Awakener Orb, clicking Item 1 first then Item 2.
- You now have a shield with two great mods (+1 totem, +2% max resists) and 2-4 random mods. 4/14 to hit an empty prefix, 9/14 to hit a bad third prefix, 1/14 to hit a good third prefix. If possible, benchcraft life.
- Further crafting is possible with Harvest and metamods, at considerable cost (expect 20+ exalts to significantly improve it)
Medium Budget (~2 exalts, RNG heavy, lots of trading)
- Start with a Dex only or Str only Shaper shield with ilvl 70+. 73 is probably ideal.
- Apply a good Essence until you hit the Shaper totem mod
- Consider Scorn (spell crit), Greed (life), and Loathing (attack block). Deafening gives better results, Shrieking might be better value.
- If you went Greed, you can later further improve the item with expensive Harvest and metamod crafting (chasing 'gain 3-5% life on block). For Scorn and Loathing this isn't a realistic option.
Low budget (RNG heavy, but cheap, should be sub 1 exalt)
- Start with a pure Dex shaper shield, ilvl 73 ideal (slightly higher OK)
- Apply Pristine fossils until you have the totem mod on an overall good package item
- Pristine fossils make you less likely to roll the totem mod, but more likely to roll it on a good overall item.
