Few actors demonstrate the range and adaptability as Christian Bale. Throughout a career spanning several decades the star was worn a lot of wildly different hats: Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight, the cowboy Newsie Jack in Disney’s Newsies, the wall street serial killer Patrick Bateman in Psycho, former VP Dick Cheney, and, at least once, Jesus of Nazareth. Still, beyond his obvious skill on the screen, Christian Bale is famous as much for the drastic transformations he often undergoes to play certain roles. Whether losing a ton of weight to play the crack-addled Dicky Eklund, or gaining it right back to play the VEEP in Vice, there can be no question that the star stands in pretty rarified air when it comes to pure dedication to the craft.
So, even though his skill is unquestionable, what can be questioned is just how Christian Bale prepares for his roles: what makes him tick, how does he train and change his body to fit each new character, and what has he specifically done in order to embody real human beings. It’s one thing to pretend to be someone that doesn’t actually exist, right? There’s a lot more wiggle room there.
