How To Fix RFI Radio Frequency Interference Neumann Microtech Gefell Microphone XLR Cable Mod Hack
SmartRig Amazon USA: http://amzn.to/2tGzseL UK: http://amzn.to/2uWpHcM In this video I explain a simple cable modification that may help people with RFI Radio Frequency Interference or EMI Electromagnetic Interference on Microtech Gefell and Neumann microphones.
I can say that this is a fix for everyone but it's worked for me on a number of occasions. It's well worth giving it a go, if it doesn't help you can just re-wire your cable back again.
This issue is usually a result of a ground/earth/shield problem between the standard balanced wiring of an XLR audio mic cable and the electronic system of the microphone.
The hack or mod is done by simply moving the ground leg on the female end of the XLR cable to the ground or shield of the XLR plug.
In the video I explain and show how to do the cable modification and also give examples of two cables connected to my Microtech Gefell M71. One cable has the mod and doesn't show any signs of RFI, the other cable has standard wiring and clearly shows the radio interference.
In the test I'm using a Saramonic SmartRig which phantom powers the Gefell and amplifies the signal straight to my camcorder. No audio has been processed in the recording or the edit, so it's all exactly as recorded.
The SmartRig is an amazing small cheap pre-amp, it can produce a nice clean uncoloured signal even at high gain settings. Check the links at the top of the descriptions for the SmartRig.
