Illusion Of Gaia (SNES) Pt. 9
What is Illusion of Gaia?
It is the Age of Exploration. Numerous expeditions have been launched across the world, and you, young Will of South Cape, were a part of one with your father, the legendary explorer, Olman, on your way to explore the Tower of Babel. Something bad happened, however, and you and your father were seperated and although you managed to return to South Cape, your father was not seen.
Fast forward a year, and as Will and his friends are finishing up their lessons at the church (called a school in the English version, even though it's clearly a church) and a young girl named Kara comes to South Cape, who feels as though she and Will have known each other for a while now, as if they were good friends. But when the King Edward tells Will to give him the Crystal Ring and Will can't produce it, it leads to the Prison break of a lifetime and causes Will to begin his own expedition long before he had ever planned it in an attempt to get the Mystic Statues before anyone else and bring them to the Tower of Babel to meet with his father, Olman, who had contacted Will through his flute in the prison.
Illusion of Gaia's English version's script suffers from a pretty serious case of blind-idiot translation, as there are numerous spelling errors and typos throughout, and it gets ridiculous when you realize the fact that the translator mistranslated the word 'violinist' as 'violent.' The basic story is still intact, but things are just weird. You can look up all the stuff in regards to the translation online.
Gameplay-wise, the game feels like a mix between Soul Blazer and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. You go around and you beat certain monsters to make something appear or open a new pathway, and you can only proceed through certain parts of the game after you've gotten a certain item or a new ability.
The music in Illusion of Gaia is arguably its best point, as far as I'm concerned. The music runs the gamut from happy and cheerful to mysterious to majestic and everything else. It's a real feast for the ears, as you'll understand if you watch this playthrough from start to finish, or even just play the game yourself.
Speaking of the playthrough I did, please note that I didn't bother going for all 50 Red Gems. After you've gotten 20 of them, you don't really need anymore. And--spoiler warning here--all you get for them is a cameo of the first boss from Soul Blazer, and you have to fight him as Will, who is the absolute worst character under your control when it comes to fighting bosses, as he only does 1 point of damage to them. Will also has the shortest reach of all three characters under your control, as well.
Illusion of Gaia is the second entry in Quintet's Soul Blazer Trilogy, along with Soul Blazer and Terranigma, and of the three, I would go so far to say that it's my favorite of them.
