The lives of thousands of military personnel injured in battle could be saved thanks to the new use of an old drug. TXA is a drug that's been given for some time to women to treat heavy periods. It helps the clotting process and so reduces excessive bleeding. It is also been given to patients in surgery to cut the need for a blood transfusion but it's never been used to treat traumatic injuries. Now though it's being used to treat personnel injured in Afghanistan.
