A playthrough of Ion Fury's first two levels, "The All-Seeing Eye" and "Trouble in Paradise."

Ion Fury is an awesome love-letter to such 3D Realms classics as Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior. Just like those games, it features sprawling, non-linear levels that are chock full of humor and secrets. As you can see in the video, it's also very fast-paced--especially by modern standards.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is how the levels are seamlessly connected rather than broken up by intermission screens. This means you can sometimes go back into previous levels to hunt for secrets or items you left behind to aid you on your journey ahead.

The only gripes I have with the game are that the performance leaves a lot to be desired (the frame rate drops in the video occur even when not recording) and the reload feature (taken from previous Build Engine games) doesn't really add much to the gameplay besides pure frustration (there's nothing like running into a group of enemies only to get stuck in a reload after firing your first shot; not to mention, you can't even check how many bullets are left in your current magazine!).

Overall, I think Ion Fury is a must-play for anyone who enjoys oldschool first-person shooters, and especially fans of the aforementioned 3D Realms games. The outstanding art, music, and level design and the intense, fast-paced combat more than make up for the gripes above.
