Left 4 Dead - Collapsing Atlas Statue Appreciation
A perfect example of Valve's fine work with modeling: the infamous collapsing Atlas statue.
Story: As a newcomer to hammer, I was trying to figure out how the Atlas statue collapsed after 40 melee strikes to the belly. Turns out the rules were baked right into the model! Just got to love their work.
The first statue was just my first attempt to figure out was going on.
Tools: Left 4 Dead in 1280 x 720 resolution, fraps, Sony Vegas Pro 8, Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools Beta, Hammer Editor, atlas.mdl
Method: Add an entity props_physics_multiplayer, select the model, let's have a go at it!
The first statue was just the atlas statue as a prop_dynamic entity output to a counter entity telling it to add one for every time damage taken. counter entity outputs kill of statue prop_dynamic entity after max value of ten hits. I slipped the standalone globe into the statue as a prop_physics entity, asleep and movement disabled (valve provided the model along with the gibs, which means the individual globe was also provided in the L4D models).
Recorded using L4D console commands "thirdpersonview" and "give health".
