Let’s Play BG2 EE #96: When You Wish Upon a Djinn…
They say that there’s no limit to what can be achieved with magic and nowhere is this more true in D&D then the Wish family of spells. Both are very high level spells – 9th for Wish and 8th for Limited Wish – but their versatility warrant them being so difficult to cast, for the sky truly isn’t the limit for what you can wish for. There are two types of wish that you can ask for; safe and risky. Safe wishes are things that fall within a finite list of options and can be asked for without any risk of your request backfiring. This can be emulating the effects of certain spells, acquiring a particular item or learning information.
Risky wishes are where the true power of the spell lies but are open to interpretation by the djinn you’re asking to grant your desire. One must word their request very carefully indeed to leave as little wiggle room as possible, for the consequences of not doing so can be dire indeed. A request to have a powerful artefact for instance could result in it being teleported before you… along with its owner. Wishing to have time never age again might result in Imprisonment being cast on you or being turned into a statue. These are just a few examples of the near infinite ways a poorly worded wish can go wrong, but sometimes the need is so great or the caster so foolhardy that the risk is taken regardless.
If you’ve guessed that Edwin is going to cast Limited Wish, you’re absolutely right. As to what he’s going to wish for, I will only say that the party will be talking about the outcome of his wish for many moons to come and for all the wrong reasons.
