Watcher’s Keep is a multi-level dungeon similar to Durlag’s Tower in the original game. Added in Throne of Bhaal, it’s the only location accessible in both that and Shadows of Amn, which should go some ways to telling you how difficult some of the content within it is. It’s entirely optional and the events within have no real connection to the main plot, though the entity barely contained within the ancient fortress is a threat unlike any that the realms have seen for many centuries. Were it to break free, few would be able to stop its destructive rampage. The people here seem to believe that only we can stop it, but is that true? And just what is this unnamed threat?

Watcher’s Keep is designed in such a way that you can easily leave regardless of what floor you’re on. This allows you to go sell loot, resupply or take a break and do other things in between forays into the dungeon. Much like many of the game’s other quests, the implied urgency is just that; you can take as long as you like to go through the place and with it being accessible in Throne of Bhaal, they expect that you’ll be working through it for a long time. The challenges within are many but so are the rewards, some of which can be upgraded in the expansion if you keep hold of them. Whether any of them will be useful to me remains to be seen as we take our first tentative steps on a quest like no other that involves finding no lost musical instruments… or does it?
