Let’s Play Ravenloft Strahd’s Possession #27: Exploring the Cemetery
This is my first playthrough through this game. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.
While we’re not wholly done with the church – there’s the bones of the priest’s acolyte we need to try and resurrect and the room on the ground level we couldn’t access, likely due to missing a switch – we can always go back there later if the plot doesn’t demand we do. For now, we have a new area to explore, the cemetary, a place it's best not to delay going to lest we anger the ghost that currently possesses Jerard's body Considering the state of the church next to it and what the jeweler's spirit told us of the ghouls lord that resides there, one can only imagine how dangerous this new location is going to be.
While there are a lot of enemies in this new location, there’s also another danger that you might not notice until it’s far too late: level drain. There’s a reason the game gave clerics access to negative plane protection and that’s because quite a lot of undead can drain the vitality from people with their attacks. Mechanically, this is done by lowering the level of the person who fails their save against the effect and while in Baldur’s Gate you can restore those lost levels with spells, there’s no way to do that here. Negative Plane Protection will shield you from one attack but the best way to defend yourself is to prevent the enemy from reaching you in the first place.
Much like when we got poisoned in earlier videos, I will be reloading whenever we suffer from level drain to ensure we don’t end up in an unwinnable situation. That the game doesn’t allow you to reverse is regrettable and a sign of its age but it’s nothing we can’t handle.
