Jay's Thoughts
If I haven't made it clear enough already, I'm not a sports guy. So suffice to say I went into Mario Golf with some preconceptions. The main one being that golf is boring, and despite Nintendo's excellent track record in making great games, this game would just not be my cup of tea. Boy was I wrong.
Mario Golf is a terrific golf game and a terrific Nintendo game. It presents golf in both an interesting and intuitive way. Within a few minutes of playing the game I started to see the appeal of golf, the strategic choices in how to hit your ball, how hard, with what club, and where to aim on the course. The game controlled very well and had lots of personality. Shockingly, the game also presents a very live world to explore, RPG-style.
In fact, my only regret for my playthrough of Mario Golf here is that I didn't spend more time exploring the golf course, talking to the experts and other patrons, and just generally exploring. Leave it to Nintendo to take something like golf and totally turn it into a living, thriving, interesting world.
I suppose I should really give credit where credit's due and acknowledge that Camelot Software Planning is the official company that developed this game. Though they are partners with Nintendo. In fact, weird side note, Camelot started off as Sega CD4, a team that was partnered with Sega and that developed the Shining series games... go figure.
➙ Must You Play It?
Mario Golf is a great game that presents a fun, intuitive, yet complex golf experience. The additional RPG elements make the world itself feel very fleshed out. This is a game that you'll have to make some time to explore, but I think it's worth it!
