[Synopsis]

This is a play through video of Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries 3dfx. I first played this game back in 1996 on a Pentium 100, so I played the non 3dfx version of this game. Later when I upgraded my computer to a Pentium 166 MMX with a 3dfx Voodoo 3d accelerator in 1997, I got the 3dfx version of this game. I was a real fan of the Mechwarrior series. I played the first Mechwarrior game released in 1989, and I played all the Mechwarrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy which was a add-on to this game.

Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries wasn't a add-on game, it was a whole new game. However, it did use the same graphics engine as Mechwarrior 2, so there were no textures. The 3dfx version had textures on geometric shapes which made this game look much better. CPUs would really struggle to fix in 3d textures, and the performance of games would suffer as a result. The 3d accelerator was like a math co-processor which handled the polygons for 3d games. As a result, the games looked much better, and they ran a lot smoother. Today, we call these chips GPUs(Graphics Processing Units), and 3d applications like CAD(computer aided drawing) programs and 3d games require powerful graphics cards to run smoothly. The CPU/Processor is important, but the GPU is more important when it comes to handling 3d graphics.

As for this game, the controls are exactly the same as Mechwarrior 2 (1995), so there really isn't anything new to learn to play this game. This also holds true for Mechwarrior 3, and Mechwarrior 4 as well. Mechwarrior 2 Mercs is a difficult game, and it also a long game. It is a game can't be beat in a day, you would have to play it for a few weeks. Saving is very important in this game, because if you die before you save then it is game over. This program does not give you an option to restart from where you died. The only difference between the original Mechwarrior 2 game and this game is that you can pick the missions you want. As a mercenary, you are free lancer, you are living in the world of free enterprise. If you make bad choices, you can go bankrupt, end up as a prisoner, get stranded on some desolate planet, or die. If you make good choices, you can make money, and the goal in this game is to make enough to retire. Kind of like real life.

You have choices in this game, but it all converges to one campaign in the end. The timeline of this game is during the Clan Invasion of 3050 to 3061. The Houses or factions in the Inner Sphere are divided among 5 factions with their own unique cultural references to Terra(Earth). You have the House of Kurita which is based on Japanese Tokugawa Shogunate culture, House of Davion is based on French/English medieval culture, House of Steiner is based on Teutonic Germanic culture, House of Liao is based on Chinese Maoist culture, and House of Marik is mixture of different culture with a Republican form of government. Most of these factions are feudal in nature, so you have aristocrats running these interplanetary kingdoms. Aristocrats with titles, like count, baron, duke, archduke, etc, so they are socialites where people are born into positions of power. All of these houses were once united under the Star League at one point in history, but after the destruction of the Star League they splintered into 5 factions. The Clans are the heir of the Star League, and this is why you had the clan invasion.

As for the game mechanics and game play, I thought it was very good. You have to play this game on the original machines, but for this video I used an emulator to play this game through. As a result, this game didn't run as smoothly. There aren't a lot of Pentium MMX, Pentium Pros, and Pentium II/III based computers out there. If you want to run a old game like this, you can do on GOG.com, or you can emulator, like PCEM or 86Box. People who don't have the patience to setup and install a operating system on a emulator will try to get the original hardware, or use GOG.com to play old games like these. On the last mission, I used a cheat, but for all other missions I didn't use a cheat. When I played this game back in 1996, I didn't have the internet, so I didn't use a cheat to beat it! If you want to cheat, press "ctrl" + "alt" + "shift" at the same time, keep it these buttons pressed, and type in "s" and "u". This will work for the 3dfx version only.
