Men of Valor: Fake software HRTF effect through SenAudio.dll (modified Sensaura.dll)
10Here's an interesting thing I didn't realize back when I tested this game two years ago. It turns out Men of Valor uses some kind of low-pass filter to simulate sounds behind you even in software mode. It's not an actual HRTF filter, as there's no Interaural Time Difference going on. Sounds to the far left will only play in the left or right channel. A similar effect is also used in Duke Nukem Forever, Just Cause 1, and apparently Team Fortress 2 with dsp_facingaway (thanks, Anton).
What's interesting is that this game uses Sensaura technology. Rather than OpenAL, this branch of UE2 uses something called SenAudio.dll which is a Sensaura.dll modified by Mark Zlamal. It's possible that this is a remnant from the Xbox version, as MoV was seemingly targeted towards that platform.
While Men of Valor supports DirectSound3D extensions, unfortunately the low-pass filter still persists when real HRTF is active.
