"Metal Gear Solid 2": Sons Of Liberty, the Playstation 2 game that sold me on that legendary console. To this day Metal Gear Solid 2 remains the most mind blown demo / screen shot and first time experience i've had playing a game. Nothing has come close to returning to the MGS universe as Solid Snake in the MGS2 demo.
Even after the bait and switch with Raiden I still had fantastic memories and looking back at it a few years later, I found myself becoming a fan of Raiden (in MGS2, not the later titles!).
With wild boss fights, exciting enemy AI, cool and funky music, and a top notch story; Metal Gear Solid 2 still holds up to this day.
While not my favourite Metal Gear Solid game, it sure is a classic and if the cutscenes were cut down a little towards the last two hours of the game, and replaced with more gameplay, i'd love it a lot more.
I have beaten Metal Gear Solid 2 over 100 times, and while i'm still no expert at it, I find it's the most fun when you go wild and play with the enemy AI. The soldiers in this game will call for backup on radios, search every room, open lockers, look over bathroom stall doors, and stare deeply into your soulful eyes as they inspect your imposter disguise. They are weak to adult magazines, however. So make sure to carry a few with you!
The new items introduced in Metal Gear Solid 2 are game changing, but it's the M9 trang gun that truly switched up the Metal Gear formula. It is here with MGS2 that the trang gun became a must have for all future titles. Nothing is more fun than putting an enemy to sleep so you can sneak past, or better yet; wake said enemy while standing over him so the first thing he sees is a real 9MM gun pointing at his head, forcing him to hand over his beloved dog tags, which unlock cool new game plus items.
Metal Gear Solid 2 is one of the most well designed and artistic video games i've loved. The tanker's cool blue colours and rainy night time weather contrast the Big Shell's beautiful orange hues from the struts and morning sunrise over the ocean. The attention to detail of the interior locations is something you have to experience to the fullest by playing MGS2 yourself and exploring every inch of each tanker hold and Big Shell strut.
Metal Gear Solid 2 is so beautiful that even the clear early PS2 game signs such as empty, foggy backgrounds during certain cutscenes and clear lack of facial detail that isn't improved upon until Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater don't hold this video game down.
The voice acting remains as amazing, cheesy, anime and over the top in the best ways possible. Solid Snake's voice continues to give me cold sweats. My all time favourite video game character; Solid Snake, is treated like a true legend in MGS2, so much so there was massive outcry for more gameplay featuring the fan favourite protagonist.
This MGS2 Walkthrough is also played on the PS3 as a rerelease of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, which means there's over 300 missions that future Snake and Raiden, including some cool and sorta difficult Snake Tales what if stories where you control Solid Snake in the Big Shell. Sadly, the PS3 release of MGS2: Substance left out the funky skateboarding mini game. Going to have to play the original Subtance release on the Playstation2 for that!
The first three Metal Gear Solid games are some of the greatest video games i've had in my life that I continue to hold close to my heart today. If it wasn't for Solid Snake's wild adventures I don't think i'd had continued playing video games past 2002.
