Monsters spawn in the dark surrounding areas and wander into the main water streams or the channels, they are then locked in. They get carried to the drowning pit and they die and their items flow to me. Spiders don't fall in the pit but are killed by the cactuses. Their items then fall down and also fall to me.
This underground cave was dug using diamond picks, iron picks and TNT. It's about 150x150. The main water streams stop 25 blocks out from where you stand, giving you max efficiency for spawns and locking them in.
