Beginner is not very random (probably since it's so close to the beginning of the game) and I'd seen this board a bunch before, so I just placed the mines. The other difficulties are more random. You can either open all the squares or mark all the mines, and marking the mines seems faster to me. Also, if you open an unmarked square with all the correct mines marked around it, it will both open and chord at the same time, which can save some time, so that's a pretty good incentive to mark mines anyway.
I don't actually run SM64, but this hack looked so well done that I thought a good minesweeper player needed to give it a shot. Hack is by Jcw87 AKA Johncw87.
